Plain-language information about how Waypoint Lens uses device data and capabilities.

Last updated: September 13, 2026

Overview

Waypoint Lens uses location, camera and orientation sensors to provide its core visual waypoint features. Saved waypoints are stored locally and the first release does not require a user account.

Location

Location is used by Waypoint Lens to calculate direction and distance to saved waypoints and, when you choose it, to save your current position as a waypoint. The app does not request background location. Waypoint Lens does not intentionally pass your precise location to Google AdMob as custom targeting data or as a custom advertising signal.

Camera

Camera access is used to show the live camera feed used by the landscape AR waypoint experience. Camera images are not intentionally sent by Waypoint Lens to the advertising system.

Saved waypoints

Saved waypoints are stored locally on your device. Waypoint names and waypoint coordinates are not supplied by Waypoint Lens to the advertising system for ad targeting or as custom advertising signals.

Diagnostic data

Developer/test diagnostic tools store sessions locally. Export happens only after an intentional user or tester action. Waypoint Lens does not automatically upload these diagnostic exports.

Advertising and consent

The first public release uses Google AdMob through the Google Mobile Ads SDK. The app is designed to show one anchored adaptive banner on the Waypoints list screen only. Ads are not part of the AR camera view, map, add/edit waypoint, permissions, error or confidence screens.

Google User Messaging Platform (UMP) is used for consent and privacy messaging where required. The app refreshes consent information at launch, shows a consent form when required, and only requests an ad after UMP reports that ads may be requested. A privacy-options entry is shown when UMP reports that it is required.

According to Google's data-disclosure documentation for the Google Mobile Ads SDK used by this release, the SDK may automatically collect and share data such as the device IP address (which may be used to estimate general location), user product interactions, diagnostic information, and device or account identifiers. Google states that these data can be used for advertising, analytics and fraud-prevention purposes and are encrypted in transit. The exact processing available to Google may also depend on your consent choices, device settings, applicable region and the publisher's AdMob configuration.

Waypoint Lens does not add waypoint names, waypoint coordinates, your current GPS position, user IDs or other custom targeting fields to its ad requests. The first release also does not add a separate product analytics SDK.

Analytics and accounts

Waypoint Lens does not include a separate product analytics SDK and does not require a user account in the first release. The Google Mobile Ads SDK may process interaction and diagnostic data for the purposes described above as part of its own advertising service.

Data retention and deletion

Locally stored app data can be removed by deleting the relevant waypoints or by clearing app data/uninstalling the app, subject to Android platform behavior. Exported diagnostic files remain under the user's control after export. Data processed by Google advertising and consent services is subject to Google's applicable policies, consent choices and retention practices.

Changes to this policy

This policy may change as Waypoint Lens evolves or if advertising/privacy configuration changes. The date at the top of the page will be updated after material changes.
